Frank Bales, 91, of Austin passed away peacefully on December 22, surrounded by family members. He was born in Middleburg, Ohio, on May 14, 1922, to William and Jenny Bales. He is a graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where he played football and basketball.

Frank proudly served his country as a United States Marine, reaching the rank of Captain. He saw action in the Pacific theater in World War II, and took part in the battle for Okinawa. Following the war, he taught school, coached sports, and then became an agent with the FBI. While on assignment to Galveston County, he met and married Catherine Mathis. He resigned from the FBI to make La Marque his home, went to work for a local chemical company, and was a member of the La Marque United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

During his retirement, Frank enjoyed teaching for Contractors' Safety Council in Texas City and, recently, reading for Kindergarten children at Oak Hill Elementary School, in Austin.

Frank was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Catherine Mathis Bales, daughter, Karla Bales Glass, and great-grandson Wyatt Russell. He is survived by his sister, Ladine Claridge of Grove City, Ohio, his children - Matt (and wife Judy), Barry (and wife Janet), Orell (and husband Tracy) - and his 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

The family thanks the wonderful staff at Seton Hospital and at Christopher House. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 29, at 2:00 pm at Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he was an active member. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, where Frank was a proud member.
